Contact Lens Recycling

A box of recyclable contact lenses at Monroe Vision Clinic

Due to the size of contact lenses and their packaging, the materials from contact lens packing get filtered out at recycling facilities and directed to the waste stream, contributing to landfills across the United States. TerraCycle and Bausch + Lomb have partnered to create a free recycling program for all brands of contact lenses and blister packs.

*Participating is completely free and very easy*. Simply drop off your used contact lenses, blister packaging and foil lids. You do not need to clean the waste before dropping off.

Please note: cardboard boxes are recyclable through regular municipal recycling. Please do not include them in your drop offs.

Most patients find it efficient to keep a small bag or container underneath the bathroom sink, toss in packaging when you put in your lenses and bring the container to our office when full. Some households may need more than one container if there are many contact lens wearers.

What happens to the waste?

Once received at the recycling facility, the contact lenses and blister packs are separated by composition and cleaned. The metal layers of the blister packs are recycled separately, while the contact lenses and plastic blister pack components are melted into plastic that can be remolded to make recycled products.

Monroe Vision Clinic and our patients are interested in efforts that help create a more sustainable environment. Participating in this program benefits our environment by reducing the amount of contact lens waste deposited to landfills across the country.

As a thank you for your dedication, a $1 donation will be made to Optometry Giving Sight for every pound of accepted packaging sent through this program.
